The post Dalet and Caretta Research Publish “Future of Newsroom Workflows” Report appeared first on Dalet.
]]>“This research highlights how news organizations are responding to years of change driven by evolving media habits, multi-platform production, funding pressures, the pandemic, and new technologies,” says Rob Ambrose, Co-founder and Managing Director of Caretta Research. “The findings reveal that despite acute challenges, there’s a remarkable wave of optimism among industry professionals. At the same time, it points to the opportunities to embrace fully “story centric” working and updated newsroom workflows and systems.”
According to the study, many news organizations are struggling with traditional workflows and legacy systems. Specifically, one-third say their current newsroom computer system (NRCS) does not meet their needs. While more than half faced budget cuts in the last year, only a small number actively track the cost of covering stories or measure ROI. The report also reveals a notable trend of adopting AI-enabled tools and rethinking content delivery across platforms. These changes are vital, as news operations aim to maintain relevance and engage audiences in a highly fragmented distribution model.
“Newsrooms must now create more content for multiple platforms with fewer resources. Our findings highlight the crucial role technology and modern toolsets play in supporting journalists to meet the evolving demands of their audiences,” states Marcy Lefkovitz, SVP of Product Innovation at Dalet. “Our partnership with Caretta Research enables us to share a current view of newsroom operations. The result not only outlines ongoing challenges but also provides actionable insights for future success.”
Respondents noted that modernized tools greatly simplify newsroom operations, underscoring the importance of selecting the right systems and implementing timely updates. To navigate the complexities of legacy system replacement, data, and workflow migration, Dalet recently introduced a comprehensive Competitive Upgrade Program to maximize transformation benefits, efficiencies, and cost savings.
The independent research was commissioned by Dalet and conducted by Caretta Research in July and August 2024 among global respondents in a wide range of roles, including newsroom management, editorial and production roles, technical and engineering, and craft and operational functions. Participants work for over 60 diverse news organizations, mainly public and commercial broadcasters, as well as local network affiliates across the U.S.
Producers, editors, reporters, managers, IT specialists, executives and industry analysts are invited to download the full report here.

]]>The expansion of the popular upgrade program coincides with Caretta Research’s upcoming report, “The future of newsroom workflows”, prepared in partnership with Dalet. The report found 45% of news operations experience significant challenges with legacy systems. Specifically, outdated tools and fragmented workflows that limit access to content from the field and require users to jump between multiple systems to complete tasks.
“Working with outdated systems is a challenge we recognize at RNZ,” states RNZ News Officer Mark Stevens. “Our dedicated team has worked wonders with legacy systems, including one that dates back to 1999. However, as new ways to plan, create and distribute stories emerge, the limitations with these legacy tools increase. We need to provide our storytellers with modern solutions so they can concentrate on delivering quality content to our audiences, not managing the growing technology gaps.”

Switching to Dalet gives customers a cutting-edge news workflow solution, leveraging the latest technology and backed by over twenty years of experience.
“In today’s climate of austerity and efficiency, continuing to spend on outdated newsroom systems isn’t sustainable. However, simply replacing a legacy system is not enough to drive progress. News organizations need a partner with deep industry expertise and cutting-edge technology to achieve the best financial and operational outcomes. That partner is Dalet,” states Tara Bryant, Chief Revenue Officer at Dalet.

]]>“RNZ’s upcoming centenary marks not just a celebration of our past, but a bold stride into the future,” said Mark Bullen, RNZ’s Chief Technology Officer. “This investment underscores our commitment to digital transformation, leveraging modern technologies to streamline operations and enhance our capacity to deliver timely news and information.”
Key to RNZ’s tech transformation is Dalet Pyramid, a news solution that enhances resource sharing and story collaboration for chaos-free operations that are open and auditable. The integrated solution will modernize content production and delivery with a story-centric approach. The replacement newsroom management solution includes planning, story editing and approvals, wire feeds, contact management, publishing, rundown management and archiving. In addition, the updated audio editing and management solution will let RNZ staff capture, edit and publish audio anytime and anywhere. The tech upgrade represents an investment of NZ$4.5M for the implementation and first five years of operation.
“One of the systems we’ve been relying on dates back to 1999,” remarked RNZ Chief News Officer Mark Stevens. “To put that into perspective, in 1999 Nokia 3210 topped phone sales and Google had just hired its first employee. Our dedicated RNZ kaimahi (staff) have worked wonders with these outdated tools, finding creative solutions wherever possible. However, we owe it to our storytellers to provide them with state-of-the-art technology so they can concentrate on delivering quality content to our audiences.”
Dalet was chosen to deliver the new system after a rigorous six-month tender process with almost 200 specific requirements, including RNZ’s role as a lifeline utility needing a hybrid cloud and on-premise solution. This ensures that RNZ can remain on air to deliver news broadcasts during any civil defense emergencies.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with RNZ to revolutionize their editorial workflows, enhancing both efficiency and flexibility,” said Ren Middleton, VP of Sales APAC at Dalet. “Dalet is the leader in sophisticated, automated, AI-enabled media workflows. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to empower storytellers to deliver compelling narratives to diverse audiences.”
Dalet works with many of the world’s top public media organizations including France Télévisions, the BBC and Australia’s SBS. The company’s ethos of empowering storytelling matched RNZ’s aims for the new system. RNZ will transition to the new system in 2025. Dalet is now working with the broadcaster on a comprehensive staff training program.

]]>Dalet upgrade program highlights include:
Lack of media workflow agility, efficiency and support have put stakeholders under pressure to evolve and adapt to new requirements. According to McKinsey research, “technical debt is basically the ‘tax’ a company pays on any development to redress existing technology issues, and it accounts for about 40 percent of IT balance sheets.” The article concludes that addressing the technology issues can “free up engineers to spend as much as 50 percent more of their time working on value-generating products and services; reducing costs by cutting back on time needed to manage complexities; and improving uptime and resiliency.” In essence, become a ‘Tech Forward’ company.*
“In today’s competitive landscape, media workflow efficiency and agility isn’t just important — it’s absolute,” states Dalet CEO Carl Farrell. “Traditional solutions no longer suffice: they can’t adapt, scale, connect, or provide the speed required in our fast-paced industry. Greater than the sum of its parts, Dalet provides a powerful, connected ecosystem that scales and evolves right alongside your business, providing you with outstanding ROI. Our low-risk upgrade program provides all of the key elements to make the successful leap and accelerate your digital transformation journey today.”
Following customer feedback, Dalet has identified three key legacy workflows that M&E companies can significantly improve upon with Dalet Flex.
Archive Management
Production Asset Management
Integrated Editing
Dalet’s consultative approach ensures optimized configuration and workflows with full implementation services, ranging from training to workflow creation and turnkey migration. ]]>The post Dalet Helps Australian Football League Protect, Monetize and Share its Rich Game Heritage appeared first on Dalet.
]]>“As custodians of the history of the game, it’s really important that we provide a simple way for future generations to access and experience the game’s rich history,” comments Spencer Wilson, Operations and Broadcast Manager for the AFL. “Dalet Flex provides a single source of truth for this mammoth archive. You can use Dalet Flex to search the archives, pull content and package it for monetization for any type of sales channel. The core design of the system tracks not only media assets but manages commercial agreements, compliance requirements and transactions tied to those assets. This allows us to set up an on-demand service that radically changes how we can share with our broadcast customers and fans.”
As the governing body of the professional Australian rules football, AFL is the guardian of the league’s video archives, preserving historical game content for its club members since the very first game captured on film in 1909. Concerned with degradation and loss of valuable assets and the growing storage requirements for each of the 400 plus games shot in progressive formats, the organization sought to digitally preserve its entire archive. The AFL used Telstra Purple to configure the Amazon Web Services data servers and data centers that stored the digitized game content and Dalet Flex to facilitate key media logistics functions including archival searches, retrievals, and packaging of content for on-demand and multi-platform distribution. The new on-demand media request workflow enables AFL to significantly expand the use of historical game content and deepen fan engagement from discovery of favorite club heroes of the past to the history of the game.
The AFL archive project comes on the heels of several high profile sports transformations including Lega Serie A, the National Rugby League of Australia, Arsenal Football Club, and the Ligue de Football Professionnel, all of which implemented Dalet solutions to drive new video strategies to expand their multigenerational fan engagement across digital channels.
“For years, AFL has been producing content and delivering to their fans all ‘for the love of the Game.’ They are leveraging Dalet Flex to enhance their video strategy, and transform from a sport organization that oversees an archive to a media-savvy sport organization that utilizes technology to optimize their high-value content,” comments Ren Middleton, Regional Sales Manager ANZ, Dalet. “Innovative on demand and digital video strategies take experience and understanding. We are able to bring all of our best practices delivering video solutions to a number of iconic leagues and teams, and deliver faster, more efficient, more impactful workflow solutions like AFL on-demand archive.”

“Migo facilitates what would have been an out-of-reach, expensive digital experience for the mass market consumer segments, as a snackable and affordable product, and uses Dalet Flex streamline content package and delivery,” states Daniel Money, Operations & Supply Chain Director, Migo. “Dalet Flex is a strategic technology solution that manages our data delivery workflow, as we build an entirely new category for content delivery and consumption using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that is telco-independent.”
Migo’s innovative workflow has been shortlisted for the prestigious IBC2021 Innovation Awards and will be presented at the NAB Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference (BEIT) on Wednesday, October 13 at 11:30 AM PST.
An expert in creating new mass distribution models, Migo’s Founder, Barrett Comiskey, developed the technology behind the Amazon Kindle e-reader, revolutionizing book distribution. Migo’s disruptive product is a downloadable “sachet” of content-to-go. Consumers can download Migo content over a local public WiFi at one of the planned 100,000 proprietary kiosks located in small convenience and general stores throughout Indonesia. Once downloaded, consumers can watch offline anytime anywhere, without the need for an Internet connection. The approach is 40 times less expensive than the next best alternative.
“The initial in-house developed software stack, production and content distribution layer was a complicated, tiered design solution. There were many upstream and downstream dependencies that were always changing and initially we made the choice to design it in-house. This proved to be quite challenging to maintain,” states Daniel. “We looked again at the industry for robust and flexible content workflow solutions and were impressed with the Dalet Flex value proposition from the quality of the UI and breadth of use cases. Then I think what really sealed the deal though was the personal side – their technical sales team really impressed us.”
Dalet Flex’s native cloud architecture provided the immense flexibility that Migo needed to adapt to changes caused by the pandemic, while supporting its ambitious growth plans to scale to 1,000 locations this year. It serves as the foundation that connects Migo’s Taiwan, Philippines and Indonesia content operations with comprehensive media logistics capabilities fully orchestrating content packaging. With content priced to compete with a bottle of soda, Migo’s dynamic business model benefits from Dalet Flex’s precision in managing content to mitigate mistakes and optimize operations at every level. Hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the end-to-end workflow simplifies the many upstream and downstream adjustments while providing transparency into the business.
“Migo’s business model adds another layer of complexity to the usual digital content packaging and delivery needs,” concludes Patricio Cummins, general manager for Dalet in APAC. “Dalet Flex takes care of the intricacies while enabling users to work collaboratively across locations thanks to cloud infrastructure. Migo can efficiently manage thousands of hours of content within their content warehouse while leveraging in-house integrations for transcoding and distribution.”

Migo levels the digital playing field for 3 billion emerging market consumers by bringing the best bits of the internet to the local corner store in every corner of the world.
After bringing reading into the digital era, Kindle tech inventor Barrett Comiskey built Migo’s disruptive unique tech solution to provide affordable access to digital products and services. Backed by Temasek, blue chip companies and key industry insiders, Migo delivers data 40 times cheaper than the best telco alternative. This cost advantage is projected to grow over time as data consumption increases.
Migo launched in Indonesia in 2020. Its product is micro-subscription passes providing customers access to entertainment, education, financial services and more at the neighborhood cloud (aka Migo Download Stations or MDS) hosted at convenient retail locations.
The company plans to rapidly expand in other emerging economies with huge mass market segments in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Dalet systems have supported BFMTV programming throughout their entire history, from a small newsroom of 50 people to what is today several hundreds of simultaneous users and advanced workflows covering all production and playout operations. Serving all operations across multiple locations, the Dalet Galaxy systems facilitates immediate content sharing across all departments, supporting desktop editing for fast turnaround news and sports via Dalet OneCut, and advanced packages crafted on Adobe Premiere Pro CC brought seamlessly into the collaborative workflow via Dalet Xtend.

]]>KEXP is a Seattle, Washington, based radio station and arts organization renowned for featuring breaking new artists. KEXP approached Dalet to unify all of its media acquisition, production and delivery under a single advanced MAM platform with extensible and rich collaborative production and metadata tools to curate a continuously growing catalog of exclusive performances and music libraries. The Dalet solution will transform KEXP’s ability to create, manage and distribute a full range of live, recorded and on-demand audio and video content to enhance its brand’s reach across traditional and new media platforms.
“At KEXP we pride ourselves on being one of the few radio stations tightly connected with artists,” says Kevin Cole, Senior Programming Director. “We champion breakout bands not supported by commercial media outlets. Our mission is to help our audience of passionate and intelligent music fans discover and explore the best new music across all music genres.”
“KEXP has leveraged open source music metadata repository MusicBrainz to build a metadata schema that allows us to capture detailed information about each artist, recording, genre and more,” says Chief Engineer Jamie Alls. “It enables us to store, index, search, distribute, re-distribute or associate with other content. All of this rich information will contribute to building a unique library that will serve the organization for many years to come. The decision to invest in Dalet is driven by our understanding of its ability to manage this entire process while working with external systems like MusicBrainz.”
KEXP’s 43 DJs are widely recognized as experts in their field, presenting the newest emerging popular artists alongside established bands. Artists championed by the station include Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Nirvana and Soundgarden. KEXP’s varied programming mix includes a real-time on-demand playlist, a two-week archive of radio shows and an array of podcasts.
KEXP also features in-studio performances and interviews transmitted live on air or pre-recorded, edited and then broadcast or made available on-demand. The Dalet installation lays the groundwork for the station to better leverage social media platforms for trends and analytics for on-air talent and programming to produce audience-driven playlists.
“KEXP is a true visionary,” says Frederic Roux, Director of Sales, USA & Canada, Dalet. “Its approach to transforming a radio station into a true multimedia production with connected audiences is a major leap forward. We are very proud to be part of this high-profile project and help deliver the technical foundation that will allow KEXP to shape the next generation of its operations and content distribution.”
Roux continues, “Dalet Galaxy is an open and scalable platform built on a flexible workflow engine and central repository. It orchestrates any complex combination of automated processes and human tasks, taking away the complexity of technical operations to allow a focus on the user experience and business process, increasing productivity, quality and reach.”
Dalet Galaxy is a production, playout and distribution system designed for media convergence, underpinned by the powerful workflow engine of the Galaxy platform. The integration at KEXP provides a complete digital environment, enabling smooth integration with a number of key third-party applications. All pre-recorded programs and audio/video content production for commercials, station promos or jingles will be created using Adobe® Audition® or Avid® ProTools®. Audition and ProTools users will push files and associate metadata to the Galaxy central repository where it will be indexed, stored and synchronized with the MusicBrainz database.
KEXP is one of the most influential listener-supported non-profit music media organizations in North America. More than 200,000 listeners from around the world tune in to the station each week over the air and online. On KEXP’s YouTube channel, videos of exclusive in-studio performances garner more than 1.7 million views per week. KEXP produces over 500 live performances each year.
